March 15, 2010 10:20 AM- Only a few pet owners take their pets with them while relocating to other places. A report from Singapore said that fewer pets were moved in and out of Singapore last year by their owners relocating there or to other countries. According to the animal activists, many pets were being left behind or abandoned after their owners left Singapore as pet moving proved to be too expensive, particularly during the recession. The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA), which grants import and export licenses for pets, stated that 2,079 dogs were brought into Singapore last year, down by 25% from the 2,765 dogs brought in 2008. Similarly, only 587 cats were brought into the country in 2009, which is only about 55% of the 999 cats brought in 2008. The figures include dogs and cats imported for sale at pet shops. The decline in pet moving could have resulted from "social factors", like the economic recession, which led to less global pet shipping, said the AVA's assistant director for corporate communications, Mr Goh Shih Yong.
