How to Move a Cat?
7 July 2010- How to move a cat is the question in every person's mind who are moving and have a cat or cats. You have to take care certain basic things as well as law and regulation specific things while moving with cat. So either you are moving to different state, city, long distance, cross country or a new home, there are many issues of law, permissions and even your cat itself. Keep all things in mind to make the moving as stress-free as possible.
Few Important Things You Must Do to Move Cat
- Always get you cat checked by Vet before moving.
- All the shots must be up to date and do check this before moving. Some of the states wont accept the records that are even few days old.
- In case your cat needs any kind of special food or medicine then do keep the stock for at least two weeks so that you do not have any problem in finding the same at new place.
- Now if you are travelling cross country or long distance then keep the complete record of your pet with you.
- Keep the blanket or things that your cat uses daily with you.
- Know what all papers and documents are required while moving a cat.
- Know if your cat healthy enough to make the move?
- Is there any international organization of vets that can help you at new location?
Keep Cat in a Room While Packing
You must keep your cat in one room while you are doing packing for moving. This will keep the cat calm and also it will be easy to find the cat. If you can do then make one people sit with the cat so that your pet feels completely safe and secure. Select the room that is least required by you while packing. In room also keep the blanket, toys, food that your cat eats and their litter box in the room. Also make sure that you do not make huge changes and that too abruptly before moving as your cat will know that some is happening and will behave very strangely then. Make sure that you pack their things at the end. If you have more than one cat and moving them in large carrier or crate then make sure to keep their food clamped on the door. With this the food will not slide to the side.
Talk to Your Cat While Moving
Make sure that you talk to your cat while moving and also before moving. It is not only human who understands the feeling but your pets can also do that and respond to your emotions and talks very quickly and easily. Make the cats feel comfortable. For this try to give them more treats than usual. Like you can let them sleep with you if you normally do not do. If you already know that your cat is going to give you trouble while moving then better to give them sedative from vet. But you must pre check this before the actual date otherwise you may get totally weird cats.
Do not Feed the Cat Before Moving
It is advisable not to feed th cat to fullest before moving as it can cause health problem. It is better if you do not feed them if you are travelling not too far. But if you are travelling at a distant place then go for the very little feeding.
Moving Cat by Road
If you are moving by road then you must find out the hotels and motel on the way then allow cats. What are the charges and rules for staying with cats. Keep your cat's food, dishes, blanket and litter box with you.
Moving Cat by Air
- You need work harder in finding out the rules and regulation pertaining to moving with cat. You must inquire about these.
- Do you need reservation for cat?
- How many cats you can move in a cabin?
- Will they allow carrier while moving in cabin?
- Can you keep the cat's carrier under your seat or not?
- If they are moving cat in a cargo hold then is it pressurized?
- What about temperature control there?
- In case of flight delay or rerouted how to check your pet?
If you are keeping your cat in the carrier while moving then make sure that this carrier has the lock. Also keep the label stating your address and phone number. Also never forget to keep the soft blanket and favorite toy in your cat's carrier. To keep the blanket in place use the double stick tape and stick it on the floor of the carrier and floor.

Check the details like business license, time in business, types of carrier used to move cat. Also check how long will they take to move the cat or pet and from where you can collect your pet.
