Climate Controlled
Self Storage
February 19, 2010 - People who move to a new destination for a short period of time, usually prefer to avail the facility of warehousing. Even if someone relocates at a distant place for a pretty longer time, they could not take all of their belongings with them like those of antiques, art works etc. They could not even sell them off due to their emotional or even financial values. In such a situation, they have to depend on self storage facilities for storing their prized possessions. However, the regular self storage units do not ensure proper safety of valuable goods. Climate controlled self storage is thus required in order to keep the valuable things intact over a period of time.
Climate Controlled Self Storage
Generally the climate control self storage units are more expensive then the regular self storage facilities. This is because, the climate controlled self storage units have to install and maintain expensive equipment for air conditioning and heating, thermostatic and insulation, as well as humidity control equipment. Mostly three types of climate controlled self storage can be found. They are temperature controlled; humidity controlled; and temperature plus humidity controlled self storage. These storage units are better isolated and therefore less prone to dust.
In temperature controlled storages units, the temperature is usually kept at 50-75 degrees so that moths and insects may not destroy the stored items. This type of storage unit is good primarily for expensive furniture and fur etc. Humidity controlled storage units maintain the relative humidity at 55 or less. In such an environment, mold and mildew growth is restricted to preserve the valuable items like antiques and art works.
Many of the climate controlled self storage have 24-hour security provided with the help of modern security equipment like CCTV, touch alarms, etc. These storage facilities also conduct regular pest-control exercises so that any chance of the space getting infected with mice, termite or bugs might be prevented.
When is Climate Controlled Self Storage Required?
If someone has to just store the household goods, usually climate controlled self storage is not required provided the storage facility is well maintained and the mover rightly prepares the items for storing period. One requires to avail the services of a climate control self storage only when s/he has to store one or many items mentioned in the list below here.
-
Paper products such as files, important documents, etc. need to be placed in climate controlled self storage as they are very sensitive to mold and mildew.
-
Electronic appliances or items such as refrigerators, freezers computers and computer parts should also be stored in climate controlled self storage (the one with humidity control as well) because they are sensitive to rust and dust as also to high temperatures.
-
Musical instruments that have wooden and metal parts such as those in pianos also need to be stored in climate controlled self storage. These musical instruments are sensitive to rust and dust and tend to rot easily if not taken care of.
-
Rugs, carpets expensive mattresses that are sensitive to rust and mold must be stored in climate controlled self storage
-
Antique furniture that are sensitive to humidity, mildew and tend to get cracks and be damaged must be stored in climate controlled self storage.
-
Art work should be stored in climate controlled self storage, if they have to be stored (they are recommended not to be stored in storages).
Iron goods or goods that have parts made up of iron such as bikes, tools etc should also be stored in climate controlled self storage. Iron is most sensitive to rust and thus requires a properly controlled climate to be stored.
-
Furs and leather products should be avoided to be stored. However, if they have to be then they must be kept in climate controlled self storage only. Leather hardens over time due to oil loss from excessive heat and humidity. Both of them are also prone to be damaged by moths and insects.
